"A" Clever Show and Tell

This past week I have made a huge effort to try and teach Trevor his Letters in the Alphabet. I was so religious at "Mommy School" for Tyler and have yet to be as faithful with Trevor. After going to Tylers first Parent Teachers conference his teacher commended me for the hard work I put into teaching Tyler his letters early in age. Is has allowed him to really grasp and enjoy reading. In fact he along with a couple other kids in class have been placed in the advanced reading group because of his letter recognition. It made my heart swell to know that my hard work paid off and that Tyler was able to recognize and pronounce his letters with such exactness due do my devotion to "Mommy School". I was not gonna let another moment go by were I didnt find that same focus and motivation for Trevor. Hes almost 4 years old and I feel terribly guilty that he is oblivious to all letters of the Alphabet. No more!

So without any more hesitation last week we started introducing the Letter A. I got him a little Pee-chee of his own and made some copies from Tyler's Old Pre-School Book MiMi got him years back. Trevor's "Mommy School" may not be as structured as Tyler's being that im 32 weeks Pregnant, and have more children which create addition chaos during my day, but non the less we have found our own groove and routine and it seems to be working quit well. I posted the letter A (Upper and Lower Case) on our chore wall in the kitchen. Every morning after scripture study we all repeat the letter of the week and the sound it makes. Then throughout the morning when I notice the energy level rising above my sanity. I quickly gather everyone to the table and we all do art work. Crayons, Tape, Glue, Markers and paper all go on the table and while the other kids stay busy drawing I make that time to help Trevor do his worksheets. Each day he does the same worksheet. Him and I sit together as he traces the Upper and Lower case A. He loves this worksheets and by the end of the week he can now recognize the Letter A around town, sound the letter A out, come up with words that start with A, and can free hand the Letter A as well. Phew pure confirmation to me that its never to late to jump on board the "Mommy School Train"
Thursday morning I made Trevor and the rest of the family "A" pancakes. One of my fondest memories of Tyler when he was learning his letters. I had to pass this tradition on. Trevor was so excited to see his pancake made into an A. He enjoyed it so much he begged to take his "A" pancake to "Show and Tell" at school. That sounds like my little Trevor man, so sentimental. I couldnt brake his heart so I made a really nice "A" pancake and Trevor and I together worked on a little display card to show his friends at school. He was beyond excited.

Oh and I made these cute little Indian Corn snacks for class that day. I found the recipe in "Family Fun" and couldnt wait for my day to take snacks into school. It was super easy to make and the kids gobbled them up. I knew they had been learning about the Mayflower all week so I felt this snack would fit perfect for such an neat story.

You know what did the trick for our kids? Leap Frog Letter Factory and Leap Frog Word Factory. My Sister-in-law gave it to us as a Christmas gift and it teaches them the letter and the sound associated with it and then word factory teaches them how to make words for reading. It has been really affective especially with babies coming to our home and with moving so much.

Love the Corn treats. You need to make an additional blog where you put the recipe in there for all to see because your ideas for the kids are so cute. :-)

Aprilll.....shhhh dont spoil the boys Santa gift. Yes I loves those leapsters were getting the two older boys the leapster explorer i think its called. I cant wait Trevor loves playing letter games on the 'puter so i know he'll have a blast. and Tyler is just completly utterly obsessed with learning so i know he'll enjoy it. But i dont think ill stop Mommy School still. I just love the connection and the peace it brings in our home when thins get crazy. iuts fun to sit all the kids at the table when they are full of usless energy and play school with them and watch their borem slip away. its really a passion of mine that I love doing with or without hand held game devices.
