Tyler is getting older now. Almost 6.5 to be exact. Ive been noticing this change in him lately. Hes has a strong desire for bigger responsibilities. Hes becoming extremely bored with his toddler toys and yearning for something more challenging to play with. With this being my first son I have no idea how to fill this void. I dont know what to replace his little toys with. I have spent many long months trying to listen and observe him more searching for some kind of hint onto what this next stage of life includes. One thing he's been saying to me lately is how bad he wants to grow up and do the things that Mommy and Daddy do. I took that as my clue. I have mentioned to him several times that being a grown up isnt as fun as he thinks. I have been teaching him and the other boys how to be more grateful for all of Daddys hard work and where all the money goes that he earns for our family. I decided it was time for me to check off one of my long awaited goals I set when Tyler was born. That is to one day teach our kids how to pay and understand bills and to learn how the appreciate hard earned money. I want Tyler and our other boys to understand these life skills so that when they grow up to be men it will be second nature to them. They will have a strong foundation in these skills and be able to function independently with the ability to budget their money out and save for things they need. Thats my long term goal as a Mother.
So last week I sat down with Tyler and walked him through the process of paying our bills. I had him count the amount of money for each bill using Monopoly money. I then taught him about checks and how they are cashed out at our bank. I know it sounds deep but Tyler really enjoyed the challenge and really understood the process. He is now my new Budget Buddy.

He had so much fun putting address labels and stamps on all our bills.
And he couldnt wait until the next morning to hand the bills to the mail lady.
